Oregon District store set to close at end of month

Jimmy Modern in the Oregon District will close at the end of this month so its owner can start a new career as a vintage picker.

While the storefront won’t exist anymore, owner Jimmy Kitz still plans to sell his 20th century modern furniture, art and accessories at shows. He said he’s been in the business so long people just bring things to him, but now he wants to travel to find his own treasures to sell, similar to the stars of the show “American Pickers.”

“I’ve already been telling (customers) when they come in that I will be becoming the next American Picker…Who knows, they might give me a television show,” Kitz said.

Kitz has been at his current 605 E. 5th Street location for more than a 10 years. He was selling his vintage merchandise for five years before that from his former garage in Oakwood and later a store on Brown Street.

The store is running a liquidation sale where merchandise is 50 to 70 percent off. It’s open from noon. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

There is a chance the store may remain open until a show in February, Kitz said. But for now he plans to close at the end of this month.
