St. Marys rescue two victims from river clinging to air mattress, tent

UPDATE @ 12 p.m.:

Fire and police crews received a report of three victims in the St. Marys River at 12:20 a.m.

First responders put a rescue boat in the water and requested assistance from Auglaize County EMA, the St. Marys Township Fire Department, a drone pilot from the St. Marys police department and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources rescue team. The ODNR team was canceled before arrival.

The rescue boat caught up to two victims floating by holding onto an inflatable mattress and a tent between Markley Road and Glynwood Road. The victims were transferred to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital.

The third victim was found safe in a shelter house.

Officials believe that the victims were camping by the river before ending up in the water.

The St. Marys River is currently high due to recent rains, but officials said that the rescue went smoothly.

Crews were able to clear the scene at 2:50 a.m.
