Student charged after police find 38 packages of firecrackers in backpack

A Middletown school was placed on full lockdown one day last week after a student was found with firecrackers.

Middletown police were called Sept. 12 to Summit Academy, 7 S. Marshall Road, after a staff member found a student with firecrackers, according to a police report. An administrator told police the school was having “an issue” the past couple of weeks with someone setting off firecrackers during the school day.

Several students were given firecrackers by another student, according to the report. When that student’s bag was checked, police found 38 packages of the firecrackers.

The student was charged with illegal possession of a dangerous ordinance, a fifth-degree felony, and inducing panic, a second-degree felony, according to police.

The 14-year-old student was transported to the Butler County Juvenile Detention Center. He will have his pretrial hearing at 9 a.m. Monday before Judge Ronald Craft, according to court records. He remains in the Juvenile Detention Center.
