Here's why Warped Wing's beers went globe-trotting on vacation

They required no luggage at all. They were model passengers on the flight, and they posed flawlessly for every vacation photo-op. Turns out, Dayton brews make the perfect travel buddies.

Erica and Chase Szente, a Beavercreek couple, recently returned from an overseas excursion where they celebrated their four-year marriage anniversary. Huge craft beer enthusiasts, especially when it comes to Dayton beer, the Szentes look for every opportunity to explore new breweries and find new favorites. While new brews are great for waking up an enthusiast’s pallet to new flavors, the couple knows there’s nothing that beats a tried-and-true Gem City cold one.

That’s why they brought six of their favorite Warped Wing cans with them on an eight-day trip to Azores, Portugal — a chain of nine volcanic islands in the mid-Atlantic, each with landscapes more dramatic than the next.

"So we both play or played rugby with Dayton Area Rugby Club and Warped Wing is probably our biggest sponsor," Chase said. "We've built this great relationship with everyone at Warped Wing over the last few years, and we love their motto of "Share a Pint, Make a Friend" because with rugby you travel all over and make friends. Even after a game, win or lose, you sit down with the other team and share some beers and food."

The Szentes took the Warped Wing motto of “Share a Pint, Make a Friend” to an international level when they sat to talk and share beer with locals on both the Saõ Miguel Island and Terceira Island — even swapping cans with some hotel staff who are beer enthusiasts themselves.

“We took these beers with us to enjoy some ourselves, but we also gave a couple away to beer lovers. ... And we aren’t the first from our club to do this. Players have taken Warped Wing beer to other cities and countries, like Ireland, and taken photos like these. So it’s almost becoming a bit of a challenge among our players to see how far we can take Dayton Rugby and Warped Wing and get both names out there,” Chase said.

Although they couldn’t say where their next luxurious, beer globe-trotting adventure would take them, the Szentes said Warped Wing will likely always be in tote. That’s easy living for a pack of aluminum cans.

“We love being able to share Warped Wing with others, and we wanted to take that motto with us when we travel,” Erica said. “We wanted to share a pint from Dayton and make some friends. Get the Dayton name out there, because we love Dayton.”
